Journal Note
I was walking towards our local supermarket and I saw this scruffy little dog with a bib on it. A lady was selling raffle tickets for Dogs for the Deaf and I confess my curiosity got the better of me – I had to ask how do these dogs help deaf people. She told me they have a special signal every time the phone or doorbell rings. I had to know more... a spark of an idea for a book on working dogs began.

Now, most people think because I wrote the book that I'm probably 'dog mad' but I must confess I've always been a cat person. After interviewing the dog handlers and watching the dogs in action I developed a huge respect for these dogs on the job.

Amy, a seven-year-old Labrador cross dog joined our family not long afterwards.
